2027: Group expresses support to Yari on rotational presidency

A transparency and good governance group, Transparency Watch, has thrown its weight behind the position of Senator Abdul’aziz Yari on rotational presidency.
Yari, Director General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, recently told a northern audience in Kaduna that it was not the turn of the north to run for the presidency of Nigeria and advised them to vote for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to enable the south to conclude its turn.
Yari advised northerners who are aspiring to cut short the eight-year tenure of the south to have a rethink, pointing out that the southern region should be allowed to complete its eight years for the sake of national unity.
In a statement made available to newsmen by the group’s Director of Public Affairs, Cliff Richards, the group said Yari should be commended for his forthrightness and sense of national unity.
The statement emphasized that unlike many a public office holder who would shy away from telling the truth in order to curry favour from certain quarters, Yari has the courage of his convictions. It also described Yari as a patriot who will not sacrifice national unity and stability on the altar of region or partisanship.
The statement drew attention to the fact that after eight of Muhammadu Buhari, a northerner, as president, it is only fair and just that the south should also take its full turn.
The statement partly reads: “We have noted with satisfaction the position of Senator Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari on rotational presidency. As the Director General of the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign council, Yari is using his position to prick our conscience on a contentious national question, that of rotational presidency.
“We note with concern that Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, is fighting hard to truncate the right of the south to spend eight years at the presidency as the north did under Muhammadu Buhari. Yari recently chose a location in Kaduna state to tell his fellow northerners to shelve their presidential ambition until after the full tenure of the south.
“We believe that it takes courage and a patriotic spirit to make such a declaration. Unlike most politicians who will hide under some masks in situations like this, Yari has shown forthrightness and sincerity of purpose.
“He has, by his action, demonstrated that he places national unity and stability above narrow, regional interests.
“We urge Yari to stay committed to good causes. It is only patriots who have the courage of their convictions such as Yari that can stand by the truth. Our appeal to all concerned is that peace should be given a chance. They should listen to the wise counsel of Senator Yari. He means well for the country”.
